Raphael Mwaura, Nancy Wamaitha and Theresa Gitonga were arraigned in a Thika court before chief magistrate Stephen Mbungi and charged with trying to rob an old woman in Thika town.

The court heard that on August 21 at Thika town, the three, while armed with a dangerous weapon, attempted to rob Veronica Muthoni of Sh1,000 violently.

The prosecution told the court that on the said date at around 9am, the complainant arrived at Thika town from her rural home in Kigumo to purchase some medicine at Witeithie estate within Thika. She was walking to the bus stop to catch a matatu to Witeithie when the Wamaitha confronted her asking her where she was headed. Allegedly, the third accused, Gitonga, joined them and volunteered to help the old woman.

The first accused, Mwaura, then drew near them driving a Toyota Corolla and the two women pushed the complainant inside and started demanding money from her. The public noticed an unusual thing happening and blocked the road then called administration police officers and the three were escorted to Thika police station.

The three denied the charges and were detained at Thika police station after the criminal investigation office asked the court to hold them for three working days to complete investigations. The investigators said more complaints against the accused persons were likely to arise.

They will be availed in court on August 27 when their case will be heard.
