Three residents of Otongolo in Kisumu County were on Tuesday arraigned before a Kisumu law court to answer to charges of looting a neighbour’s house.
Monica Ayiro, Robert Kamano and Stephen Ochieng are alleged to have raided the house of the late Agnes Okonda and looted property worth Sh300,000 on May 30 this year.
The first and the second accused denied the charges while the third accused pleaded guilty before Kisumu chief magistrate Catherine Owino.
Ochieng told the court that when he took the property, he did not know that he was committing a crime and he took them with the impression that Okonda was a good neighbour who did not mind sharing.
The crime is said to have taken place while Okonda's relatives had gone to Homa Bay to bury her, as it was required by their traditions.
Among the looted properties include television sets, home theatre, utensils, clothes and shoes.
The three were accused along with other three people who were not present in court as they are still at large.
The prosecution had objected bail applications on the grounds that investigations were still ongoing.
They were released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 each with surety of a similar amount pending the hearing of the case on July 27.
