Confirming the11.30am incident, Athi River police boss Sharma Wario, said the accident occurred after a matatu belonging to MAKOS Sacco collided with a trailer at Bridge 39, a few metres from Devki Steel plant, off the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, The Star reports.

The trailer was heading to Mombasa while the 14-seater matatu was en route to Nairobi.

Wario said the matatu driver, who is among the three who died on the spot, is reported to have been overtaking when the accident occurred.

The driver of the trailer escaped with minor injuries.

Athi River traffic boss Moses Kimeli said such accidents which occur due to carelessness can be avoided and urged passengers to always speak out whenever they see drivers flouting traffic rules.

“When you are trying to overtake at a bridge on a highway, where are you rushing to?” he asked.

“Be bold enough and say no. All motorists should stick to drivers’ code to avoid fatalities. This is a big loss,” he said, as quoted by the daily.The injured passengers were taken to to Shalom Community Hospital, Athi River town.
