Financial outlet agents in Kisumu town have been advised to avoid closing their business late into the night to ensure their security.
Kisumu Town Chief Tom Onyona told the press on Monday that insecurity cases that had in the past month been reported especially those involving M-pesa businesses have declined because the agents do not extend their business into late in the night.
Onyona said that they will continue sensitizing M-pesa operators to consider closing their businesses by 6pm especially in crime prone areas of Nyalenda, Obunga and Manyatta.
“Since they have not employed security personnel and usually leave their business premises with huge sums of money, it is important to take necessary safety precautions” he added.
He said that the information has already been passed through the M-pesa operator’s association leaders in the town to prevail upon their members to adhere to the requirement.
In the last three weeks, three M-pesa agents have been killed by unknown robbers in Nyalenda and Kibuye open air market, raising concerns about security situation in the Lakeside town.
The incidents led to protests by traders in Kibuye market over increased insecurity in the market area but police have maintained that the situation is not out of hand.
