Three public primary schools in Mombasa County are among the first schools to receive free laptops and tables that will be delivered to 150 selected schools in the country.
The three schools in Mombasa are Sparki Primary School in Mvita, Mwijabu Primary School in Changamwe and Kisauni Primary School in Kisauni Constituency.
The Digital Literacy Programme was one of the Jubilee government’s promises given during the 2013 General Election.
On Tuesday, the government distributed free laptops and tablets in 12 schools across the country with over 11,500 standard one pupils receiving the devices during the first phase of the programme.
Sparki Primary school head teacher Mr Alfred Nthiga said the school received 80 tablets learners learning devices, two laptops for the teachers and one projector which will be used during the computer lessons.
Mr Nthiga said his school had started the computer programme lessons in 2009 with the help of USAid and with the introduction of the free laptops and tablets project from the government, it will be an added advantage.
“We are glad that we are among the first schools to benefit from the project. We admitted 80 students in class one this year and each is expected to benefit from the devices. We have received 80 learners’ tablets and two laptops for teachers in the two classes. The package also includes a projector and a WiFi device,” said Mr Nthiga.
Mwijabu Primary School received 69 tables and Kisauni Primary School received 111 tablets together with laptops and projectors.
The Sh17 billion project will see Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Moi University provide the laptops, routers and servers to 150 schools in the country.
