The structure will be fireproof and contain a water point for the firefighting in case of emergency. The traders said that they are impressed by the efforts of the government to rescue them after the market was burned down by unknown persons.
Garissa Market Traders’ Association chairman Paul Chege told the press that they have been several cases of fire at the market. He also said that the recent fires have dealt businessmen blows.
“Most traders get small loans from banks and other financial institutions and because they are unable to repay, they end up fleeing,” he said, as quoted by Star.
He added: “We appreciate that the surveyors and engineers are understanding and took into consideration our concerns.”
The traders welcomed the construction of the stalls after property worth more than Sh100, 000 was lost.
On his part, County commissioner James Kianda said that no one has been arraigned in court over the matter but soon the culprits will face the law.
