Three internally displaced persons in Mumoi farm in Subukia have died in a span of one week due to hunger-related complications. National IDP chairman Peter Kariuki on Wednesday expressed fears that the number could increase if nothing is done to provide food for the IDPS. Speaking to reporters in Nakuru, Kariuki said that the hunger pangs were caused by the lack of rains in the area. “The elderly and the breastfeeding women are the most affected," Kariuki said. "They are very weak and cannot work hence they cannot be engaged in manual jobs. We are appealing to the government through the department of special programmes to supply us with relief food so that they can at least be able to survive,” he added. Kariuki said that majority of the IDPS also needed counselling for the trauma they are undergoing. “Many have not healed from the effects of the post-election violence. I am proposing that the government should provide a stand-in counsellor so that any time an IDP feels like talking about his experience, he would be able to share it with them.” Kariuki also appealed to the government to fasten the resettlement process, saying many of the IDPs were getting depressed due to despair.
