Police on Monday shot and killed three suspected members of a knife-wielding gang in Mtongwe, Likoni sub-county, Mombasa.
Likoni police boss Benjamin Rotich who confirmed the incident said the three are suspected to be members of a gang known as Chafu.
Mr Rotich said the suspects were on police trail for a series of robberies within Mombasa and its environs.
He said the officers stormed their hideout and challenged the suspects to surrender but they tried to escape and the officer opened fire.
The police boss however said one of the gang members managed to escape adding that a man hunt has been launched.
“The police ambushed the gang at their hideout in Mwenza. They tried to escape before they were killed. The police are looking for a fourth suspect who managed to escape as investigations continue,” Mr Rotich said.
The police boss added that during the operation, they managed to recover two machetes from the house.
The killing comes barely a week after a notorious gangster who has been terrorizing residents in Mombasa County was shot dead by police officers.
The suspect identified as Zakayo Ogode was a member of a criminal group involved in robberies in the county and was shot and killed at his hideout in Ziwa la Ng’ombe in Nyali Constituency during a major operation carried out by a special unit.
