A thug was shot dead while three of his accomplices escaped with gunshot wounds in an early morning robbery incident in Thika town today.
According to Thika Administration Police boss Samuel Obonyo, the gang was stealing gas cylinders when the members of the public tipped the police who reacted promptly.
“We were informed of the robbery at around 5am by members of the public of an armed gang stealing gas cylinders from a nearby establishment,” said Obonyo.
"Our officers arrived at the scene but the gang decided to engage my officers in shooting rather than surrendering. They were over-powered and the one who was the get-away driver was shot dead but the other three escaped with serious gun wounds,” confirmed Obonyo.
Obonyo added that a Toyota Premio car was later impounded in Majengo area in Thika with 11 gas cylinders.
"We believe that the car was also being used by the same gang but we have launched investigations into the matter", he said.
The gang is said to have been using an AK-47 gun to carry out the robberies.
