Police have launched search for a gang that murdered a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer in Nairobi on Monday.
The soldier, who worked at Kabete Barracks and was a paratrooper, was killed in a mugging incident along Taveta Road.
Central Police OCPD Robinson Thuku told the Standard that the officer was walking alongside a female friend from a club in the area at about 5am when a gang struck.
"He was hit on the head as he fought off thugs who had confronted him," Thuku said.
The soldier died in hospital where he had been taken to receive treatment after the incident.
Thuku said the criminals escaped without stealing anything from the victim.
Witnesses said the gang had been on a mugging spree targeting pedestrians who had been out to usher in the New Year.
"They confronted the man as he walked and a brief confrontation ensued before we saw him on the ground. They had hit him on the head and escaped," a witness told the Standard.
