Kisumu Central OCPD Christopher Mshimba has said preparations for Madaraka Day celebrations to be held at Jomo Kenyatta Sports grounds are underway and security measures are in place to ensure that members of the public attending the function are secured.
He said calm had been restored in the city after the anti-IEBC demonstrations were suspended.
Business on Mondays as a result of tension closed down over the demonstrations that turned chaotic.
“We are ensuring paramount security is provided as members of the public prepare for the holidays celebrations. Preparations are underway and I urge members of the public to turn up in large numbers for their security during and after the event is guaranteed,” assured Mshimba.
National Youth Service (NYS) troops were on Monday deployed to rehearse for the day’s entertainment and venue preparation.
The preparations are amid claims that plans were underway to have leaders boycott the Nyanza region celebrations.
Opposition supporters are being urged not to turn up for the celebrations over what they termed as "impossibility to sharing a platform to celebrate non-existence of independence."
Messages from sources yet to be established indicate plans to have members of the public boycott the celebrations.
