Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has challenged shopkeepers and other traders to sanction their customers from purchasing goods in case there are not registered voters.
Timamy says the move will enable more target population to make use of the one month mass voter registration exercise that kicked off across the country on Monday.
He also urged local leaders to join in the campaign regardless of their political affiliations.
“I am appealing to all shopkeepers across the county and other traders to restrict their customers in case they are not registered as voters. Voting is a right to all Kenyans which we cannot take for granted,” he said on Wednesday.
“Leaders should also join us in sensitizing our supporters. We need more people on board for the sake of transforming our country both socially and economically,” he added.
Timamy added that he would spend most of the remaining weeks traversing the coastal county to meet the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s target.
