Speaking on Monday at the market, many traders blamed tax collectors of grand corruption and intimidation targeting innocent traders when executing their duties.

The urged the county government to also reduce the wage bill by introducing digital payment methods as a way of improving transparency and accountability in the finance department.

“I have seen these people collecting taxi from us but I suspect that there is something fishy behind it. I can confirm that they are using duplicate receipts therefore engaging in mega corruption that is hindering execution of development activities in the region,” said Agnes Moraa.

“If they digitalise the system of collection, I am sure we will not only deal with corruption, but also the current wage bill given the large number of people who are employed there, doing the same job in the same region,” added Annah Nyamoita.

They also asked the county leadership to instigate criminal proceedings against officers who have allegedly intimidated traders when collecting revenue from them.

“We must understand that we are not advocating for digital collection of taxes because we want them out but it is just for efficiency. The county should liaise with us so that they instigate assault proceedings against some of those officers,” Ms Nyamoita said.
