The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert on heavy rains between the months of March and May, 2018.
The heavy downpour is expected to cause floods in the following regions; Coast, Nairobi, Eastern and North Eastern.
According to the report published on the Daily Nation, the Kenya Meteorological Department director Peter Ambenje spoke during the 48th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum for March to May at Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa.
Machakos County falls in the Eastern region and therefore residents should take precautions to avert the coming damage associated with floods.
The county is largely dry, hot area and water shortage is one of the major challenges facing the residents.
One way of turning the heavy rains into a blessing is to arm oneself with water harvesting materials, from water tanks to digging trenches in the farms.
Another way of preparing for the coming floods is to purchase warm clothing in advance, these include jackets, sweaters, rain coats and gum boots.
The prices of these items will rise when the rains come and so it is economical to purchase them now before their prices shoot.
Residents of Athi River and Mlolongo will agree with me how messy it gets when it rains in these areas.
It gets so muddy that walking becomes a nightmare, the County Government of Machakos constructed footpaths and drainages along major roads but more work needs to be done.
We all know that water and electricity do not mix, rainy seasons are associated with rampant power lose and one of the ways to deal with this is to stock a lot of alternative power sources i.e. charcoal, paraffin, gas, generators and candles for lighting.
It is also important to stay safe and reduce the chances of being stroke by thunder and lightning.
When it rains, it is safer to stay indoors.
Do not seek shelter under a tree, do not carry sharp-pointed objects.
