The governors made the decision public on Friday, saying there was no need for the referendum since the agenda can be addressed in other forums.

Kiambu County Governor William Kabogo said MPs can be able to allocate the amount they need in the counties.

“The current referendum push is ill timed and I was not pushing for the same referendum Cord (Coalition for Reforms and Democracy) was pushing. The national assembly is capable of allocating the funds without necessarily pushing for a referendum,” Kabogo said

Kabogo’s sentiments were supported by his counterparts Mwangi wa Iria from Murang’a, Kirinyaga’s Joseph Ndathi, Kinuthia Mbugua from Nakuru, Nderitu Gachagua from Nyeri, Martin Wambora from Embu and Nyandarua County’s Waithaka Mwangi.

In an exclusive interview today, Kabogo he said: “We were not coerced to pull out from the referendum push. It was, however, the right thing to do as parliament has powers to grant us whatever we want without going back to the ballots.”

Kabogo urged all elected leaders to work and stop engaging in dirty politics, saying this is the time to work for Kenyans and engage in politics.
