Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has differed with Governor James Ongwae on the putting up of a sugar factory at Nyangweta forest in Kisii County.
Speaking at the Senate on Wednesday, Mr Tobiko argued that removing trees to give space for the sugar factory will be dangerous for the environment.
"The building of the sugar factory at the Nyangweta Forest is not eco-friendly. Cutting of trees will affect the environment," said Mr Tobiko.
According to him, the forest cover in Kisii is 2.6 percent against a requirement of 10 percent.
He said that taking away 120 acres to build a sugar factory at Nyangweta forest will diminish the cover further.
This comes barely three weeks after Governor Ongwae told the Senate that the factory will be a source of employment.
