Kiambu County Speaker Gathii Irungu has called for political tolerance among politicians across the political divide ahead of the 2017 polls.
Irungu while speaking to journalists at Ndumberi grounds during the Madaraka Day celebrations on Wednesday said that tolerance will; ensure peace as the country heads to elections.
The Kiambu Assembly speaker said that political sideshows being perpetuated by some politicians will cause tension among Kenyans.
“As political leaders whether Jubilee of Cord must work towards creating cohesion and tolerance among ourselves and Kenyans at large,” he said.
Irungu said that the country is likely to experience political chaos similar to the one experienced in 2007/2008 if politicians don’t refrain from selfish political sideshows.
He said that there was great need for political leaders to work together and find solutions to the issues facing Kenyans.
On the same note, the speaker wants opposition leaders to utilize the constitutional mechanisms available to have changes at the Independent Electoral d Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Irungu said that use of protests was not the right way of demanding for change.
He said that IEBC is an independent constitution office and can only be disbanded through constitutional mechanisms.
“Our brothers and friends in Cord should use the constitutional mechanism in their quest to disband IEBC,” he added.
Irungu also asked the opposition leaders to consider dialogue on their matters instead of calling for protests.
