Tomato farmers in Keumbu ward in Kisii County are decrying the continuous losses as the price of the commodity continues to depreciate each day.
According to some of the farmers, currently a crate of tomatoes goes for Sh300 compared to the initial price of Sh25,00 or Sh3,000.
Denis Mosioma a farmer from Keumbu said that they are currently in a situation where they cannot pay their loans that they took to start farming as the prices keep on reducing day in day out.
“Early in September the prices were at least and we used to sell one crate at Sh500 which was also too low,” he added.
Another farmer Caren Atutu added that they have no option but sell their tomatoes at a throwaway price as currently, they can’t make any profit but loses and they can’t even afford to pay their farm workers.
“Even paying workers isn't easy but we hope the prices will be back to normal in few weeks time,” she added.
She cited the situation may have been caused by the prolonged drought that normally favors’ the growth of the commodity price.
