The price of tomatoes at Wakulima market in Nakuru has soared since the onset of long rains in the county.
A tomato wholesaler in the market, Geoffrey Ouya attributed the increase in the price to heavy rainfall which he says is not conducive for the crop.
"The price has soared due to the ongoing heavy rain which is not conducive to the thriving of the crop. The tomatoes were also ruined by the tomato blight disease which is prevalent during the rainy season," he said.
He revealed that most of the tomatoes that are being sold in the market are now sourced from Tanzania which makes the price dear as traders pass overheads to the consumers.
However, the price of onions at the market has slumped following a glut of the produce.
Ouya said the price of the commodity has plummeted from Sh70 per kilogram to Sh50.
He pointed out that the surplus of the produce is as a result of good weather which has seen farmers harvest in plenty.
