Kibera residents may be forced to forego the consumption of tomatoes following the scarcity of the commodity that is hit the area.

The shortage which begun towards the end of last year, has worsened.

Now residents of Kisumu Ndogo said they have resorted to cooking food without tomatoes whose prices are high.

They said traders have taken advantage of the scarcity to exploit them.

Normally, they buy one tomato at Sh5 but the price has tripled to Sh15.

"Since the year started, I have only used tomatoes once, and that was during the New Year celebrations," said Dorothy Achieng on Thursday.

To her, life continues as usual and doesn't really feel the pinch.

She said tomato is now like a luxury, and that she cannot forego basic needs for it.

"We are now used to this kind of life,'" she said.

On her part, Emily Wanjiru said  she is not used to the life but has to cope with the situation nonetheless.

Mary Atieno who operates a grocery in the area said indeed the demand for tomatoes is high compared to the low supply.

She said their suppliers charge them more and for them to make profit, they have to sell them at higher costs.

She is optimistic that the situation will normalise soon.

"'Things will soon be alright," she said.
