The traders said the ongoing heavy downpour has greatly affected their businesses because customers have kept off.

“Our suppliers have been supplying more tomatoes but it is unfortunate that the commodities are rotting in stores due to lack of a market and customers despite the drop in prices. I have incurred losses since tomatoes are the main source of income,” said Euniah Nyaming’a vendor.

Timothy Morira who hawks tomatoes using a pushing cart said he has not been going to work for the past one week because the rains start at the time he should be at the market selling.

“I have not been at the market for the past one week due to the heavy rains. Traders from villages have not accessed tomato stores for the last one month due to bad roads in the area. The commodities have rotten completely,” he said.

He said it is time for the county government to improve the roads in the region for traders from interior villages to access the tomato stores at Daraja Mbili for selling in various markets in Kisii County.
