Women in Kiandutu slums have been urged to take family planning to reduce level of poverty and school dropouts which is on rampant in the slums.

Speaking during the Kiandutu Outreach Project (KOP) of malnourished children program in Kiandutu slums on Monday, Thika township ward MCA Kennedy Mwangi said that cases of school dropout has been alarming in the slums due to poverty and huge family to cater for their needs.

He said that families give birth to too many children in the slum yet they are incapable of catering for their basic needs education and food being the major ones.

The MCA noted that drugs and substance abuse are also the major hindrance in the slums with children as early as twelve years engage in the heinous act due to parents neglect.

He insisted that the cause of this failing parental care is due to lots of children and poverty which is the main cancer in slum dwellers across the nation.

The legislator has advocated parents to take family planning which was being given free of charge by the KOP in Kiandutu slums where many women availed in large number.

He revealed that the Thika Sub county Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) will soon crack the whip to under age children who are not in school during school hours and the parents will be accountable and be brought to books.

Mwangi has called on parents to be aware of their children whereabouts and they should start family planning method to prevent giving birth to many children they will not cater for.

The Family Planning program which began on Monday is set to end on Wednesday.
