A prominent Nairobi hotel has survived the auctioneers axe over debts.
The Jacaranda Hotel located in Westlands and owned by late Cabinet Minister and prominent businessman Njenga Karume was saved from auction after the family moved with speed and paid Sh75 million to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
The hospitality facility was to undergo auctioning on Friday over Sh400 million tax arrears owed to the Kenya Revenue Authority.
The family now wants the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to commence investigations into the matter and take appropriate measures to stop the luxurious hotel from being sold.
The facility is said to be clouded in a debt tussle with KRA for non-remittance of Value Added and Pay As You Earn arrears dating back to 2015.
On Friday, KRA sent auctioneers to seize the hotel and sell its property valued at approximately Sh4.5 billion to recover the cash expected to be paid to KRA.
But quick response from the family saved it from being sold.
One of the late Karume's daughters, Karume Mukuhi said the family agreed to pay KRA the Sh75 million and the remaining balance will be cleared later.
The seven children belonging to Karume are presently embroiled in a tussle over the management of their father's Sh25 billion business empire.
