Kenya is ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world and most of the major corruption scandals are always slipped away from the public eye. Here are the top three scandals swept under the carpet:
NYS Scandal.
The National Youth Services scandal which led to the looting of taxpayers’ money worth 1.8billion shillings under the office of Devolution and Planning occupied by Governor Anne Waiguru.
Even after the Parliamentary found the current Kirinyaga governor culpable and noted that she should be charged and prosecuted, she was later cleared by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the scandal became a past tense.
The puzzled scandal also involved Josephine Kabura, Mutahi Ngunyi, and Kipchumba Murkomen among others.
The Anglo leasing Scandal.
This might be the longest scandal in Kenya since it started when the government wanted to procure a new passport printing system in 1997.
The scandal involved a passport equipment system which was quoted at 6 million Euros but a French Firm but tender awarded to a British Firm at 30 million Euros who then sub-contracted the French Firm to do the work at the initial price.
The former vice-president Moody Awori and then Internal Security Minister Christopher Marathi were claimed to be the greatest beneficiaries.
Despite enough evidence, the case suffered a slippage from the public.
The Afya House Scandal.
This was a mega corruption deal which involved double payment of goods, manipulation of the Integrated Financial Management System and diversion of funds by the Top Ministry of Health officials which led to the loss of more than 5 billion shillings.
