Kericho governor Prof. Paul Chepkwony has promised to reward all expectant mothers who deliver their babies at the county hospital maternity wards with Sh2,000.
The move is aimed at promoting healthy child birth in the county as many residents in the county prefers home deliveries which pose a lot of risks to both the new born and the mother.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for 64-slice Computed Tomography imaging services center at Kericho county Hospital, Chepkwony also warned that those found delivering at home will also give the same amount to the county government.
“All the expectant mothers in the county must deliver in our health facilities. I will give a reward of Sh2,000 to every expectant mother who delivers in the county hospitals maternity wards. Those who will prefer traditional birth attendants, if discovered, will be required to give me a similar amount of money a fine,” said Chepkwony.
The county also received a Sh10 million from the Sikh community who reside in the county for the construction of an ultramodern maternity wing at the Kericho County Hospital
Kericho deputy governor Susan Kikwai on her part revealed that the construction of the maternity wing is set to begin in July in collaboration with Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewek Jatha.
"We are going to construct the maternity wing in conjunction with the Nishkam on a matching fund basis,” said Kikwai.
