Garissa Township lawmaker, Aden Duale, will have to defend his re-election in the August 8 polls.

This is after his closest challenger former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim filed a petition in a Garissa court, to challenge his election.

In the election, Duale, the National Assembly Majority Leader who vied through a Jubilee Party ticket, was declared winner by Constituency Returning Officer, Boru Duba, after garnering 22,587 votes against Maalim of the WDM-K's 14,897 votes.

Others in the race were Aden Mohamed Abdullahi (135 votes) and Abdi Yare Mohamed (454 votes).

In his petition, who unsuccessfully vied for the Senate Speaker's post in the 12th Parliament, wants the court to overturn Duale's election, arguing that it was flawed, and that the poll was marred with massive irregularities.

He also wants the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ordered to avail all voting material such as voter registers and counterfoils, electronic devices and equipment used in all polling stations.
