Kiambu County Deputy Commissioner Mr Paul Famba has raised concern that few women are serving in the policing department in the county.
Famba, who was accompanied by over 20 local chiefs from the county government at Gikambura on Monday in Kikuyu said that the ratio of women serving in the department to that of the men is 1: 5.
“I would encourage women to go for the jobs, they should not just sit down and let men do the work for them. In our department, there is only one woman serving as a chief which is a big concern," he lamented.
According to the Foundation for the Sustainable Development (FSD) throughout Kenya's history, women have been subjected to consistent rights abuses while shouldering an overwhelming amount of responsibilities.
Only 29 percent of those earning a formal wage throughout the country are women, leaving a huge percentage of women to work in the informal sector without any federal support.
The officer, who was speaking in the presence of Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichun'gwa, said that women should apply for policing work without fear of being marginalized.
Ichun'gwa also insisted that women in the sub-county should apply for not only policing jobs but also vie as politicians in various seats during the next general elections.
“Women it this area should go for the most top leading positions and vie in the next general elections," he said.
