She is a member of parliament representing Ijara constituency in Garissa County, a first in Northern Kenya where cultural conservatism makes it hard for women to ascend to positions of leadership.

Sophia Noor is passionate about women issues that has seen her hold top leadership positions in community organisations. 

Sophia trained as a public teacher and after acquiring a degree in Community Development, she decided to serve her community through her work with several international organisations, including CARE International, UNHCR, Oxfam, World Vision, Save the Children, MSF-Spain and MIKONO international.                         

She is also a founding member of Womankind Kenya. 

Ms. Noor became the first woman from the region to seek political office. 

Noor's nomination was canceled due to the Somali conservatism that bars women from leadership.

Her driving passion has always been engaging in causes that improve the lives of women in Nothern Kenya. 

Therefore, through her work, she has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of women in the northern region of Kenya.

In her quest to fight for the rights of women, she decided to join the parliament as Ijara MP in order to advance the human rights of women and girls by introducing legislation dealing with issues detrimental to women in the Nothern region such as FGM, early marriages and wife inheritance.

Due to her work, she has received different awards including the International Democracy Fellowship for her work in women's empowerment and democratisation in 1996. a social justice award and the Father John Kaiser Human Award of the year 2007 by the Law Society of Kenya for her exemplary leadership, courage, and benevolence.
