Shortly after the surgical staff of Kenyatta National Hospital was suspended, the CEO, Lily Koros has also been sent on compulsory leave as investigations are carried out to ascertain what led to an operation on a wrong patient at the facility.
This was announced by Health Cabinet Secretary, Sicily Kariuki, today. In his announcement, the CS replaced Lily Koros with Dr.Thomas Mutie as CEO in an acting capacity and Dr. John Ong'ech as the Acting Director, Clinical Services.
The CS believes that the two have professional and the expertise to run the institution and understands well the systems in the hospital.
The Health Minister said,"......Further I have directed the board to the chair that the CEO of this organisation with the colleague responsible for clinical matters of this hospital are sent on compulsory leave, forthwith then in their place two experts will be taking over to run this institution for the period the investigations will be done and a decision will be reached following the investigations and therefore wish to pronounce myself on this matter by appointing, in acting capacity, Dr. Mutie and Dr. Ong'ech , both competent professionals who understand the systems in this hospital to take over.."
This is a move seen as a way to restructure the institution's leadership to mitigate if not do away with the bad reputation that has currently hit the organisation due to its controversies.
