Ghana Revenue Authority dethroned Telkom Kenya Telkom as the Women’s African Club hockey champions in a tense final played in Accra, Ghana.
GRA outsmarted the nine-time champions, bringing to an end a five-year dominance, peeping the Kenyan champions to a 1-0 victory.
Buoyed by their home support, GRA piled pressure on the African Champions from the onset, and went close twice to taking the lead after quick exchange of passes.
The chances became few and far between, with both teams failing to hit the net as they settled for a 0-0 halftime score.
Three corners in the fourth quarter shook Telkom’s defense, and a lapse at the rear saw the home team take the lead.The held on to the win at the final whistle, collecting their first title of the tournament to the delight of the home crowd.
The coach was however upbeat that they will collect themselves up and move on after the disappointment.
“They had a chance ad they utilized it, but the goal is totally our mistake, the keeper saved it and there was no one to clear, we had chances but we never converted them,” said coach Jos Openda, who spoke to a local media house from Ghana.
