The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Nakuru branch is set to close its office by the end of this month owing to a huge debt in rental arrears.
Chairman Mungai Muhia said the union is in a huge financial crisis which is likely to paralyse operations of the branch.
Muhia explained that they have been served with a vacate notice to leave by the end of the month if they will not have cleared the arrears.
“The branch has eight staff whose houses have been closed already and their children are out of school due to lack of school fees.
"The landlord has also served us with a notice to vacate the premise by end of this month if we will have not cleared the outstanding debt we owe in rent arrears,” he said on the phone Thursday.
Muhia also said failure by the Teachers Service Commission to remit dues to the union, they owe the government a total of Sh1 million in taxes.
He also said a bus bought by Knut Nakuru Branch through financing by a local bank is set to be re-possessed since they have not been servicing the loan.
“Where we are heading now is really tragic for us because this bus will be re-possessed by the bank for not servicing the loan which bought it,” stated the chair.
Other branches in the country have been forced to close down as the union cannot afford to pay staff and rent arrears.
