A Mandera court has sentenced a trader to six months in jail for illegally crossing into Somalia.

The suspect Samuel Omondi aged 30 pleaded guilty to attempting to leave Kenya through an illegal point.

State counsel Kennedy Amwayi told the court that the suspect occasionally crossed into Somalia through the point and police had laid a trap.

"I sentence the accused to pay a fine of Sh100,000 or serve six months in jail," ruled resident magistrate Duncan Mtai.

Mtai warned that those crossing over to Somalia illegally risks jail term and Omondi will serve in jail to serve as an example to the rest.

Mandera is among the North Eastern counties that has been affected by attacks from Al shabaab terrorists.
