Traders operating in Marigiti market within Kisii town have accused Kisii County government for failing to upgrade the market as promised in the last 4 years.
According to the traders, the market lacks water that can be used for hand washing among other uses.
“We were moved from the market for upgrade works to be done. Kisii county government under the leadership of Governor James Ongwae promised to complete the upgrade works within 3 months. It is sad that until today nothing has been done. There is no water in the market, poor drainage has led to blockage of drainage systems,” said Michael Orenge one of the traders.
He added that traders dealing with perishable goods have incurred losses because they lack fringes to store their goods.
Another trader Edina Barongo said the business people have been forced to buy water from vendors who hiked prices due to increased demand.
"Butchers and fish mongers are forced to buy water from vendors at high prices ranging from Sh20 – Sh40 per a 20 liter jerrycan. The county should move with speed and finish the upgrade works at the market and connect water to help traders carry on with their businesses smoothly because they pay daily taxes to the county,” she said.
