Small scale traders in Kisii town have accused Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officials for harassing them on claims that they were selling fake items.
According to the traders, KEBS officials have been arresting the traders from their shops unnecessarily on claims that they were selling sub standard items.
“We can not withstand the harassment anymore. KEBS should allow us operate our businesses because the items we are selling are not fake as they claim,” said Walter Nyakundi.
“It is sad for traders to be accused of selling fake items. It is time for KRA and KEBS officials to ensure the items being imported into the country are genuine and stop harassing innocent traders who depend on small businesses to feed their families,” he added.
He said traders will hold peaceful demos to protest against the rogue KEBS officials if they will not be allowed to sell their items in peace.
Another trader, James Momanyi said that he is forced to operate outside his shop because the KEBS officials are always on his neck.
