Normal business came to a standstill in Kisumu town Wednesday afternoon, as traders took to the streets accusing Governor Jackton Ranguma of not fulfilling his promise of ‘resettling’ them.
The traders who used to operate at the former Oile market went to the governor’s office, only to be told that he was not around, even after he had earlier promised to meet them.
Soon, word went round that the governor was holed up in a meeting in one of Kisumu’s hotels. They decided to follow him there, but still they could not speak to him.
Led by their assistant chairman, Fred Olando, the traders accused the governor of not willing to give them an alternative place to operate from.
“We have been booking appointments with him, but nothing has taken place. So, it is just a playing game,” said Olando.
The traders claim they have nowhere to sell their goods, after they were kicked out of Oile market a few weeks ago.
What used to be Oile market is now a fenced area, with trees having been planted and police on standby to ensure that traders do not flock back.
The Kisumu County government is turning the former market into a recreation park.
