Traders have been accused of failing to ensure the market is clean.

Speaking in the market on Tuesday evening, Martin Otundo a county council officer said that the traders accused the county council officers and the county government of lack of garbage collection from the market in time. He also blamed the traders who he accused of failing to dump the garbage correctly before the county government comes to collect it.

Otundo said that despite the arrangement by the market authorities to manage the garbage disposal within the market, traders have failed to dump wastes responsibly.

"Traders are the major cause of the increased garbage dumping in the market. We have put in measures to ensure good dumping before collection but the traders seem not to be following the routine dumping rules," he said.

The county council officer said that the county government is trying to ensure that the state of cleanliness is improved in the Kibera slums and he called upon the traders at Laini Saba market to cooperate.

"Careless dumping leads to blockage of water drainage systems in the market. This leads to floods and muddy during rainy seasons. So let’s be responsible in regards to our environment," he concluded.
