Small scale traders in Voi have criticised the county government following the demolition of their business stalls.

Graders from the county government on Saturday morning pulled down over 100 stalls managed by the traders in the Coastal town sparking protests that lasted for the better part of Saturday.

Voi Small Traders Association chairman Simon Thuo said they stalls were demolished without any notice adding that they will petition the decision with the trade department at the county.

Thuo said the graders descended on the structures at 4am Saturday when the traders were at their respective residential houses asleep.

"We didn't what the plan was. At least they should have given us notice or an alternative area for doing business," he said.

"We have children in school and some traders rely solely on this business to make a living."

The demolitions came two months after governor Granton Samboja said the county government was in the process of modernizing business premises in Voi town.

He said his government would build modern business stalls in the town to support small scale traders.

Voi is a busy town that can  support business because it lies along the Mombasa-Nairobi-Malaba route that is plies by long distance truck drivers and travelers.
