Traders at the Kongowea market in Mombasa have defied the county government by erecting business stalls two weeks after county officials demolished them.
The traders said on Wednesday the stalls were destroyed and the county government did not give an alternative land from where they will carry on with their business activities.
Through their chairman Solomon Mwakamba, the traders told the county government to give them alternative before demolishing the structures.
The stalls were pulled down to pave way for the rehabilitation of the Mombasa-Malindi Road whose construction works are expected to begin early March.
"No one has resisted leaving here, what we only want is to be given a plan B and we will move," Mwakamba told reporters at Kongowea market as the traders were busy erecting the stalls.
Last week Governor Hassan Joho told the traders to close businesses and allow the contractors begin rehabilitation work.
He said the county government value their input in the development of the county promising his administration will set a side money that Mombasa residents interested in business can apply for in loans and repay at low interest rates.
Kongowea market is well known for its fruits business and is among the key markets in Mombasa County.
