Businesses came to a standstill in Matuu town following demonstrations by traders whose kiosks were demolished by county government officers.
On Wednesday night, Machakos County government allegedly demolished more than 50 kiosks along the Matuu -Thika road to pave way for flower beds. The traders engaged police in running battles for the better part of the morning.
Transport along the road was paralysed as the traders blocked the road for hours and also lit bonfires on the road. Matuu Ward MCA David Kiviu Manyolo had a hard time controlling the angry traders.
Matuu OCS David Muli ensured that that no property was destroyed by the demonstrators. Police from Matuu police station used tear gas to disperse the traders who demanded an explanation from the county government.
Matuu town traders chairman Mbili Ndawa urged traders to report any destruction of their property to the police. He added that he will consult with the county government on the way forward and follow up for the compensation of the traders.
