Traders in Kibera have been using young children to sell their commodities in the market.
Martin Otundo, a county council officer spoke at the DC market on Wednesday morning stating that recently, young children have been seen in the market selling on behalf of the traders.
“Once I pass round collecting daily taxes, I find small children left at the business places selling. Do not involve young children to do business on behalf of you as this leads them to drop out of school and join gangs,” said Otundo.
He urged parents to ensure that children go to school daily as education is important for them and it is the key to their success in society.
“School drop outs cases should be dealt with accordingly. Many children who drop out of school engage in early employment once retrenched they turn to gangs who threaten the security of the country. Allow children to attend school since their time to be traders has not reached,” noted Otundo.
He added that anytime he is going to find a child at the business place during school days, a thorough action will be taken against traders who allow young children to boycott school and bring them to sell in the market.
