A section of business operators in Kisumu county have appealed for help from the Kisumu Water and Sewarage Company (KIWASCO)  following an overflow from a sewer.

The operators from the Jua kali sector say that whenever it rains in the county, the sewer overflows into their business premises therefore making it hard for them to do their work.

Mama Ruth who operates a food kiosk in the area says that when it rains the night before, most of her customers avoid the area the following day because of the odour from the sewer.

"Nobody would eat in a place that has such a pungent smell," said mama Ruth.

Mechanics who work around the area have also expressed their dissatisfaction. They say that the air in the area causes their belly to swell. Collins who is a  mechanic in the area says that at times, his stomach aches when he breathes in especially on the days when the sewer is overflowing.

The traders are now worried that the matter could get worse with regards to the fact that the rainy season has began. The food kiosk operators further say that their businesses face a risk of closure by the ministry of health if nothing is done to remedy the situation.

Jua kali Central Association through its chairperson Timothy Rege petitioned KIWASCO to find a lasting solution that will remedy the problem once and for all.
