[Photo/Dennis Chacha]Traders selling roast maize in Kisii on Friday held a protest opposing the decision by Kisii county government to evict them from their place of work at Kisii market behind Uhuru Plaza.
The angry traders said no consultation was done before the decision was made.
“We have been roasting and selling maize here for over 7 years. The county askaris were used to harass, intimidate and blackmail us. This is unacceptable and governor Ongwae must come to our rescue,” said Benjamin Kirera one of the traders.
Kirera accused Governor James Ongwae of planning ill against traders.
“We pay daily revenue to the county government but in return, the county has decided to appreciate us by evicting us. We will not move from the area unless we are given a new place to operate from,” he added.
Another trader, Jane Monyangi said the maize roasting business has been helping most of them to raise school fees for their children and pay monthly rent.
“We depend on roasting maize business to feed our families, pay school fees for our children and pay rent. Evicting us will subject us to torture because we have no place to go,” said Monyangi.
