Traders operating at Suneka market in Kisii South Sub County have complained about the filthy state of the market.
The traders accused Kisii County government of failing to upgrade the market as promised.
“We are incurring losses, especially during this rainy season because the market is dirty, muddy and slippery. Customers are unable to access the market because they fear our products such as tomatoes, oranges, and mangoes because they are full of mud,” said Zipporah Opiri, a trader.
Millicent Borura accused Kisii County Governor James Ongwae of giving a false pledge to upgrade and improve the market.
“Ongwae has visited the market several times and promised to build modern stalls for all the traders but nothing is yet to be done. He lied to us so that we can vote for him. We are in deep regret for electing him,” said Mrs. Borura.
She threatened that traders will stop paying daily taxes until the market will be upgraded to ensure traders are operating in a conducive business environment.
Mrs Borura urged area MP John Oyioka to move with speed to build the stalls he also promised to construct for the traders when a fire broke at the market several months ago.
