Traders have raised concern over the sale of stalls at the new market in Nasher Square in Nakuru's CBD.
Speaking to the Press on Wednesday at the market, the hawkers, who were relocated to the former Langalanga stage, claim that the selling of the stalls by people purporting to be from the county government was still rife.
They claimed that a stall was being sold for between ksh 100 000 to ksh 250 000 by unscrupulous traders.
“We have been urged to sell the stalls on several occasions by a group of people. They claim that they are the ones supposed to distribute them once the market is complete,” said Peter Nduhiu, a trader.
The irate traders now want the county to have the conmen arrested and taken to court.
“Why does the county allow them to roam around and fleece unsuspecting persons. Majority of the traders are desperate since the forceful relocation last time and hence would protect their businesses at all cost,” said Susan Mwangi
Biashara Ward MCA Stephen Kuria Muiruri admitted that there were conmen who were out to take advantage of the unsuspecting public.
“We put up posters two weeks ago calling for any person who has been approached by these criminals to bring forth the information. This will enable us to take legal action against them. However, we have warned the traders and anyone who gives out his cash is ready to be conned,” he added
Muiruri said the market will host at least 1500 traders when they complete building its sheds.
