Traders in Mombasa risk being jailed for selling subsidized maize flour for more than Sh90 per 2 kg packet if the warning by the County Commissioner is anything to by.

Speaking in Mombasa, the area County Commissioner Evans Achoki warned the traders saying it is an offense to sell unga for prices higher than what was stipulated.

"There are some reports that some traders are selling unga way beyond the prices issued by the government. We have already sent our officers to the ground and anyone caught selling maize flour beyond normal prices will be arrested and arraigned in court," Achoki said.

With a view to tame the vice, Achoki held a meeting with flour millers on Wednesday where the issue of pricing and how to implement the prices took centre stage.

This comes amid claims that some shopkeepers in the county were selling unga at over Sh100 while some force buyers to buy it alongside other commodities.
