Scores of traders today took to the streets at Ruiru Town to oppose the high levies being charged by the county government of Kiambu .
The angry traders waved placards and twigs barricaded most of the town's roads bringing business to a standstill.
The traders said that the county government had increased levies without holding a public consultation.
“We were not consulted when the county government increased levies,” said Edward Kuria, a local business man.
Susan Wairimu, a food vendor at the town said that the increase in levies would cripple their businesses financially.
“We are not here to pay all what we earn to county government. We have children at school and other domestic issues that require money,” said Wairimu.
Efforts to cool the angry traders by Ruiru sub-county Biashara ward representative Joe Mutuga failed after the traders accused him of colluding with Kabogo's administration in fleecing them .
Mutuga said that the county government erred in increasing the charges without holding a public consultation with traders. He said that he would push for the levies reversal to ensure that the traders would not be overcharged.
