Traders from Yatta in Machakos County have been advised to employ guards to safeguard their shops at night so as to reduce burglary incidences.
This call was made by Yatta police boss Edward Changach who said burglars take advantage of ongoing heavy rains to break into shops in the sub county at night.
"The rains are heavy and sometimes cause blackouts, no one would here noise so the burglars have no need to worry. That's why traders should employ watchmen," Changach said.
Changach spoke to this writer on the phone on Saturday.
He was commenting on escalated cases of night robbers in Yatta, especially Yatta shopping centre and market lately.
Changach said several cases of shops breakages had been reported in the sub county since onset of the rains.
He said the police had intensified night patrols to ensure security.
"The police will play their part and so should you, security begins with you as former minister for security would say," Changach said.
Changach was responding to the traders who decry rise of insecurity after finding their counters empty and goods stolen from their shops.
Matuu MCA Julius Ndawa had urged the OCPD and his team to up their game in curbing insecurity in the area.
"If they can't provide security for us, they should leave the job and let those who can take over,"
Ndawa said.
Ndawa said no suspect had been apprehended by the officers despite numerous cases of burglary in the Sub County.
