Speaking on Thursday, Mavoko Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Makori Kodhek said customers were checked too casually at shopping malls and other premises in the region.

He called for extra measures to ensure safety, as visitors streamed into the towns for Christmas and New Year holidays.

"Since there are national security threats due to Al Shabaab attacks, guards manning all business premises in Machakos County should be alert," said Kodhek.

He noted that the numbers of those strangers visiting the towns was increasingly high than other months of the year arguing the police alone could not ensure security in isolation.

Kodhek called on all the residents to cooperate with the police towards fighting crime to ensure they had conducive environments for their operations.
