County public health officer Samuel King’ori said that any meat being sold to the public must be from authorized distributors and must originate from licensed and authorised butchers.

Speaking on Monday afternoon when he toured the Maili Sita slaughter house in Bahati, Kingo’ri said that any meat trader found selling unstamped meat will be arrested and his license confiscated.

“Any meat that is being sold in butcheries must have an official public health stamp and must be from people who are authorised to slaughter animals and distribute meat. We will not allow any meat that does not have a clear origin to be sold to our people and nay person found selling unstamped meat will face the law,” said King’ori.

King’ori insisted that meat from animals being slaughtered at peoples home should not be sold to the public unless it has been inspected and cleared by a public health official.

“Some people have the habit of turning their homes into slaughter houses but I want to tell them that yes they can slaughter the animals at home but before the meat makes it to the market it has to be inspected and cleared by our officials,” he said.

He said that the county government will supply water to the slaughter house to help in enhancing hygienic standards.
