Nyanza regional police coordinator Charles Narangwi wants introduction of punitive measures to penalise traffic law breakers to avoid repetition of offences. Narangwi on Monday explained that this would help make sure that those motorists punished for traffic offences do not repeat the mistake. He complained that those who flout traffic rules get away too easily and go ahead to blame the police force of being incompetent. He added that most motorists who flout traffic rules make it difficult for the police officers to arrest them and bring the law breakers to book. “How do you explain a case where a motorist keeps breaking the rules every time on the roads and saying the police are not doing their jobs?” he asked. The regional boss said that the Kenyan drivers should learn from their regional counterparts in Uganda and Tanzania on how to respect traffic rules. “In Uganda, only one traffic policeman is assigned on the roads and motorists respect his or her presence and follow the laid down traffic rules. In Kenya, however, one traffic police officer is not enough to manage our roads as most motorists will not respect the officer’s presence,” he said in his office.
